crash bandicoot 2 (ps1) question?

Question

on crash bandicoot 2 - cortex strikes back (on the ps1) i failed to complete the second level (hang eight) while the timer was up so didint get a gem. when i go back the timer has gone. how do i get it back?? or how do i get the gem??
