It is over an hour when there is traffic. La Costa has a lot of closer fun things to do for night life then hitting downtown San Diego. The concierge at LC will help you, they are awesome and can give you free drink coupons too.

I assume you mean the Gaslamp Quarter downtown. On the map it is about 31 miles.
If you can find your way to the Coaster station in Carlsbad, there is one stop near Carlsbad Village and one at Pointsettia. You can take the Coaster from Carlsbad right to downtown San Diego within walking distance of the Gaslamp Quarter. The Sante Fe depot is right near Broadway and Kettner blvd. From there you can take the trolley a few blocks to the Gaslamp or you can walk, it's about 5-6 blocks. Once you get downtown public transportaion is pretty good. The trolley is very useful.
Check out the SD Commute website below, it has all the info for both the Coaster and the Trolley.

I'm a recent graduate of Paul Mitchell the School San Diego and I can tell you that I had an awesome experience! I did research into other schools and received insight from hairstylist friends of mine with mixed opinion. I decided that if I was going to do this, I was going to do it right and went with Paul Mitchell. There are several advantages to going to Paul Mitchell. The school is owned by Robert Cromeans, Paul Mitchell's Global Artistic Director. You'll have the access and opportunity to learn and assist some of the best hairstylists in the industry. During your education, you'll be learning from educators that want you to succeed in every way possible and the stateboard passing rate is in the 90 percentile. Above all else, I really enjoyed going to school because it was FUN! Good luck!

Carlsbad is quite a way from the Lamp Light District. You better find a car.

It's pretty far and don't even try to drive there in the evening from Downtown SD, it will take you forever. Downtown has a much better nightlife than anywhere in North County, I don;t know what that previous person it talking about. Downtown has the best bars and clubs in SD and a lot more attractions near it.

You definitely don't want to take a cab. It's far. I took a cab from the HIlton 6 miles away from the zoo and my cab fare was $25. Rent a car!
