I've had it all my life. It comes and it goes. It isn't even sadness. Just a locked-down, crippling darkness. I wonder how I can kick it besides medication. It only lasts a couple of weeks at a time. It is such a pain!

Does anyone else experience this? Geeez!

Well I've had it all my life too, I do however take medication for mine, simply because I have several physical conditions that can aggravate and worsen my depression.

That said, I'm not saying that your only choice is medication. There are many things you can do to help yourself. Eating well balanced meals and getting regular exercise are extremely important, as is getting enough restful sleep (REM sleep). Seeing a counselor or therapist can help a great deal.

Another thing that is the common thought in today's psychology is that you can change your brains thinking patterns. As you say, you've been like this all your life; it is the way your brain is wired right now. What you need to do is change your thinking pattern until the new way of thinking reprograms your brain and neural pathways. You need to look at life in a new way. When you wake up in the morning tell yourself that this will be a good day, you will find moments of joy and happiness. You will accomplish at least one positive thing, and you will take pleasure in little things that you hear and see.

Its a matter of perspective, if you are expecting life to be one giant amusement park of fun and thrills, well then your life will be disappointing and you will be depressed about it. If, instead, you realize that life is what it is, that there are ups and downs and that you can get the same amount of pleasure from watching some little puppies play as you can from jetting off to Paris, well then you've made your first new neural path. Its not a matter of lowering your expectations or dreams and goals. You can still aspire to get to Paris, but in the meantime don't let the fact that you aren't there yet drive the joy from your life. Take your happiness where you can find it, and rejoice in it!

I am going through the same thing right now. It seems to come and go. I was on medication for about 9 months and stopped taking it last March. I felt good for a long time. But certain things happen and I fall into this terrible pattern. I don't want the medication again, it makes me jittery. I wonder if I will ever kick this thing for good. I am ashamed and feel so sad that my children have to watch their mother cry all the time. I do not know what to do.

There are things that can be taken that help that are not what I consider medication. Ginseng is a good one to take it is just a stress lifter! It is not addictive and is super cheap (about $5 at CVS) so if it does not work for you at least you arent out 100 dollars like some prescriptions! Another thing is some people may not sleep during their depression (I become a total insomniac) and what I use is called Valerian I cannot say enough about that stuff it is a Godsend!!! I have heard it called a "herb valium"

Have you went to a regular doctor and had testing for diseases that can cause depression like thyroid diorders or diabetes...theyre are lots of things that can go wrong with your body that can bring on depression...like mono also brings out depression symptoms too...i had went to the doc for feeling blue and they immediately wanted to put me on anitdepressants...took em and they didnt help (really seemed to make matters worse..even after getting off them) but have recently been looking into the fact that depression and other conditions share similar symtoms and a couple blood tests can rule alot of these out....i would want to make sure it wasnt something else....look up thyroid disorders, diabetes, or mono on web md youd be surprised how many similar sympotms they share with depression....

You have no reason to be sad. Life is so short and u shouldn't waste it moping around all the time complaining about how tough your life is. There are so many people that are worse off then you are and many of them are just happy to survive yet u sit there at your computer and complain how tough your life is. Try telling that to a starving kid in africa that is happy to get a piece of bread. On another note, one way that helps is to do some community service or help someone who is less fortunate. If u no u are helping someone you will feel better about yourself.

I tried to go without taking meds for my depression and it did not work. If you talk to your Dr maybe he/she can help. Does the depression coincide with your period? If so it may be hormonal. Going through life depressed is no way to live when there may be a solution. Depression takes so much away from life.
