A friend tells me that most ALL Asians know how to do Karate or some form of it, as it is part of their traditional upbringing. I thought this was a stereotype. Is it?

Yea, cuz it does not apply to every chinease person im sure.........sterotypes are sterotypes when theres one perosn to prove it wrong. Thats why theres so many!

Not all asians, but a lot of schools in both japan and china do use martial arts as part of the physical education curriculum. Also, some schools and towns have martial arts teams in much the same way that schools in the US have basketball or football teams
