If I were driving on a snowy and icy city street, would putting my Jeep into 4-while drive help me to not slide around as much?

It would help you from sliding to a certain extent. Once you lose control on ice, you are in just as much trouble if you have 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive.

It WILL NOT help you with stopping. Even ABS can only help you so much on ice.

Be advised that 4 wheel drive can give you a false sense of security in inclement weather. You may drive faster than you should.

Because 4 wheel drive will not help you stop, you still need to maintain enough following distance to be able to stop in an emergency. You also still need to reduce your speed on ice.

Ice Is Ice and It don't care how many wheels are driving on it; rubber and ice don't mix at all and depending how well your 4 wheel drive works and how many wheels are driving can actually be worse then 4 wheel drive. Now there are newer vehicles out that have what is called traction control, if your vehicle has that you are better off, but again there is no such thing as more wheels make you safer on ice! Best scenario, slow down!

If the roads are completely coated without bare patches, i might depart it in four wheel force. Its the annoying non-slip surfaces that are undesirable on your bearings etc-- yet interior the top, i might think of your risk-free practices is greater significant than the vans-- pay attention on your dad! FYI... my Bronco had a reasonably decrease ratio interior the front end then interior the rear end.. (3.fifty 4 front, 3.50 back) this replaced into to grant it slightly of a "lead in" so as that purely a faucet of the gasoline might straighten it out in case you purchased slightly crossed up in a corner. Very relaxing to force in four wheel force! yet.. this is strictly why you do no longer decide for to force it on the pavement.. with the front and back ratios being diverse-- it relatively is going to truly greenback and heave in case you forget approximately to unencumber it in the previous hitting the pavement. in case you have been to envision with your circumvent broker or your axle tags, you could probable make particular no remember if or no longer the axle ratios are an identical... the nearer they are, the fewer issues you will choose on no slip surfaces.

When you put on the brakes, 4WD, front wheel drive and rear wheel drive all slide the same.

If you know how to use it properly it will help you a lot.
I suggest you practice controlled sliding in a vast empty parking lot.

it will help you to get going from a stop and possibly take slow corners, but once you are already moving, 4wd won't do all that much. You can't stop any faster.
