What will you do if this ban is imposed? This Bill is based on European Union Laws, supported by Swarznegger and maybe an intrusion on Parental Rights in the home. There will be a $1,000.00 fine and 1 year imprisonment if it passes. Could it spread to other states? There is a difference between discipline and abuse. Why or Why would you not support it?

The act of spanking notwithstanding I am against any laws that impose government restrictions on civil liberties. The government should be encouraging more parents to take responsibility for raising their children, not making it more difficult to do so.

The law as proposed forbids striking a child, including a slap on the hand. Children 3 and younger are the ones who would most benefit from a smack to tell them right from wrong. After 4 a child is old enough to understand and that is when hitting should be discouraged.

Beating children is already against the law, regardless of age. Lieber said her law is to prohibit parents from "whipping 18 month olds" (sic). there are laws already in place to protect children, this law does not do anything to help children. If the problem is child abuse start enforcing the laws already on the books.

The government needs to step out of the business of controlling the lives of their citizens and remember the fundamental reasons the government was established.

You know that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket when the government decides how you should discipline your children. Because the government certainly knows best when it comes to anything? How can you reason with a 3 year old? Next thing you know there will be a ban on not giving your child everything they want, because it is mental abuse to do so.
The people who abuse children will continue to be around, the only thing that the law will do it handcuff the parents to the whims of the children. Can you imagine the legal problems that are going to arise due to a child stating that their parents spanked them? There will be no physical evidence, but the word of a 6 year old kid.
Back when Dr. Spock (a noted child doctor, etc) started up against spanking and public grabbed onto that thought process, was when the kids started controlling the relationships. Kids these days are worse behaved than ever. They have less manners and are pushy and rude. And I am not meaning teenagers, the kids will walk right in front of you and have no problems pushing against you to get through. When I was a kid, my parents would have given me a good, well deserved smack on the butt for doing anything so rude. However, parents these days can not do stuff like that or it is considered child abuse. If the state knows how to raise the kids so well, than maybe the state should just take all the kids and raise them for themselves. Spanking has been around since the beginning of time and everyone that I know that was spanked turned out great and respectful. That proposed bill is like giving the prisoners control and say in the prisons. The kids need to learn that there are consequences to their actions, and people learn the best through some sort of pain association. How do you expect to reason with a child having a temper tantrum? Good luck on that one. We need to start getting tougher on the kids, not give them more and more freedom to raise themselves.

yes, it should. I completely agree and would comply, simply for this reason and this reason alone: "By law you would have a hard time differentiating between a responsible parent who thinks about parenting and then hits and one that does not," Lieber said. "Responsible parents have to give up the privilege to physically discipline their children for the sake of protecting children that aren't being hit once in a blue moon or in a light way, but are really being hit day after day, many times a day." I hope it's passed in california (though they've surprised me lately with passing prop 8) because if it can't pass there, it can't pass anywhere. I'm in NY, I'd absolutely vote for that law. technically, will the government be able to ban spanking? no, it will still be done behind closed doors, like illegal drugs and drinking under 21 and the like. BUT the article is so true -- "But for Lieber, who hears criticism daily from prosecutors, judges and pediatricians that children are being beaten and their parents are getting off on a technicality, the law doesn't even come close to being enough." some parents are abusers and are allowed to continue to do that because it's not illegal to spank. if it were, the abusers would be able to be punished and not let off -- some people think it's okay to spank on the bottom if a kid is in danger, some people think it's okay to spank to discipline OFTEN, some people think it's okay to hit with objects, some people think it's okay to hit with objects often. all of this is 'okay' because it's legal to spank your kids, right? where is the line drawn? I hate spanking and I will never do it. I was never spanked and I am NOT and was not a spoiled little brat running around nor was I disrespectful to my parents. being spanked does not make a kid respectful.

This bill is ridiculous and a travesty to parental rights. I for one believe that the only effective way to punish a child is by spanking (not beating). It is unfortunate that some parents don't practice enough control, but if this passes, it may spread to other states. It is wrong to have legislation wasted on issues like this - any time we borrow ideas from the Europeans (a moral vacuum), we are headed in the wrong direction. A parent should have the right to make his / her child a productive member of society without the "protective permissiveness" that is so prevalent in today's society. I am past the age of direct parenting, but this is wrong by God's laws (why can't we follow His laws for a change?)

I would not support the "No Spanking Ban" legislation. I do not believe in spanking and fought to end the use of corporal punishment in schools and do not believe it has any place in day care settings. However, I do not agree that this type of legislation will be effective, people will only view it as being intrusive.

If the point of this type of legislation is to be affective against child abuse, they are misguided. Laws of this type will not keep children from being abused. Stronger penalties
for abusers would be more affective.

Isn't there something in this bill about the age of the child, like banning spanking of children under three or something like that? If that's the case, the better question would be what kind of nut is spanking a child under 3 anyway?

I never spanked mine, I raised four and they are absolutely wonderful adults, well rounded, well educated, all in wonderful relationships and very happy. It can be done.

No, I don't.

It's Sally Lieber, by the way, who has never been married and has no children.

Yet, she's a self-proclaimed expert on child rearing. Amazing.

I don't agree with spanking a very small child. I have a son who is 7, and we do use spanking as a deterrent/punishment on occasion. I also have a daugher who is 2 and we have not had to spank her to date.

I do not believe this is going to stop true child abusers and is just another attempt at the 'nanny' state going into place. It's as if Ms. Lieber is saying the Government is better at raising children than the people are.

It's another move by the Prison Lobby to develop more Juvenile delinquents ie potential prisoners.

California has done very well taking money from schools to build bigger prisons. By lowering the educational standards you raise the prison population.

The anti spanking law is spawn of the same mindset.

I wouldn't support it. I moved away from Cali a year ago. The crime is out of control. Gangs are everywhere. There is no safe city left in Cali. If half of these hoodlums were punished and dare I say smacked a few times, perhaps families like mine wouldn't have to leave the state to raise our children in safety.

I think it's absolutely ridiculous. I was spanked as a child and it didn't hurt me one bit. Matter of fact, my grandparents had a wooden paddle. After getting spanked with it, I watched my P's and Q's. The government has no right to tell a parent they can't discipline their child. I was actually physically and mentally abused as a child and I see nothing wrong with spanking. But I do believe spanking should be used as a last resort.

Luckily,I don't have young children, but if I did,and lived in Ca,and wanted to reprimand my child ,with a spanking, and some stranger showed up and tried to arrest me,and put me in jail for a year, I'm absolutely sure the spanking of a child will quickly become the "tromping" of an intruder, and I will have considered myself as to having earned my year...
