Yeah, but it doesn't cover the basics. That's for elementary and high school. Filipino subjects in college focus more on Philippine Literature and the life and works of Jose Rizal (our national hero). You can, of course, enroll in special Tagalog classes. There are also some special schools for foreigners. EDIT: Almost everyone speaks Tagalog here. THE GENERAL DISCUSSION OF ANY SUBJECT IS IN FILIPINO, so I really wouldn't recommend anyone to study here if they're not fluent in the native language. Good Luck. EDIT 2: The second answer gives sound advice. Let me second that- If you want proper education, go to the top schools. Don't even bother enrolling on low-tier Colleges/Universities. You won't learn a thing.

December is a good month to visit Philippines, traditionally it is our biggest holiday. Most Filipinos abroad visit Philippines during time, unfortunately the airfare is high $1,500 return from SF to Mla.
I am from Angeles City Pampanga myself and I have siblings that lives there. In fact we are planning to go to Philippines Dec 2007.
I am hoping you realize that learning another language will not take one week or one month, it takes years to master any language. English is my second language and I am still learning English all the time everyday.
May I ask your purpose of learning Tagalog? and Filipino culture? I am just curious

Hmmm...$300 is too much. Now for your first lesson on Philippine culture. "Do not offer that amount to any Filipino." believe me, there are many scams out here. Filipinos are too trusting and will bite the offer. But if you fooled him/her...well it will always result to pay back time!

The best way is to have some friends in the internet that are Filipino...since you're be going here in the Philippines by December, it's really a long time from now, and it will be sufficient to know Philippine culture. Filipinos are very friendly and will be too generous to offer their hand tro help you. You don't have to spend that much.

If you have some question regarding the Philippines, I can help you and it won't cost a dime.

300 US Dollars is a big amount and some people here might volunteer even though they are not qualified to tutor you. I suggest you visit a local university or college and seek advise for a Tagalog tutor including introduction to Philippine culture.

For starters check this website regarding Philippine culture

hi briand,I would like to help you but since you will be visiting the pampanga area,I suggest who ever is going to tutor you knows the kampampangan dialect, because kapampangan speaks their dialect even there are other tagalog speaking people around,it's kind of rude but they are just like that (no offense meant to kapampangans who reads this).I could help you out with your tagalog even without pay,I just like to share with you our language, but unfornately I don't know much of the kapampangan dialect.for tagalog my email is empong_roque@yahoo.com.ph.No charge.
