This is a good question Bats and here is my answer. Although I have read alot of the others answer to this question and they all basically say the same thing such as hatred, killing, poverty and so forth which are very good answers but these answers have been issues for years maybe eons or even decades. Poverty has been a real main fear and a major problem for years. I don't believe that there is a real good solution for this problem if every nation doesn't want to address and assist to resolve the problem.Along this line comes diseases which scientists and researchers around the globe try to resolve in new medications or serums to help fight or ward off these pests that are killing hundreds each day.
Global warming is a fairly new issue that exists now that we all should be aware of and take seriously. Mother Earth is warning us so we need to take her warnings more seriously and take heed of what she is telling us.Along with Global warming comes nuclear testing which is also taking effect on Mother Earth. Not too mention what it could do to our environment and human lives if it goes beyond the testing stage.Country against country, civil wars erupting between nations it's becoming critical. It's all about power and greed.Which comes to the 3rd problem which I feel is just plain ignorance and stupidity. If all of us could just get rid of all of our prejudices, greed and the need to be the most richest and the most powerful and just be the good people that we are instead of being influenced by others or other countries then I think that alot of these issues could be resolved within time. There are too many chiefs and not enough indians in this world and this is what is causing alot of hate and discontent. You had asked if there was just one human or icon that deserves our respect in trying to resolve these issues? At this point in time I don't feel that there is just one person that can take this credit but several people who are trying to at least try to put a dent in these issues. Scientists and the researchers should get alot of respect for what they have discovered and researched to provide medicines and the new discoveries that were accomplished thru alot of hard work and sweat. Then comes the Peacemakers that really try their best but can't always succeed in their plans since not all want to participate in what they are trying to do. Thats when ignorance takes over. Then you have the evironmentalists and archiologists that research and explore and discover to tell the world on what was and what is to be and the consequences there of. So this is my answer and I hope I'm not to far wrong in what I believe in.

& 3. the threat of war
Where have great leaders done commendable things ?
1. When they commited their countries to the Kyoto & CFC's treaties and urged others to join them in Kyoto
2. When they dared to cull before the problem baloons
3. When they committed to a UN, and agreed to finance, build work in and cooperate with it
So all three have one surprising thing in common - politicians have many a times done a lot of good for us
