They can but the government campaign over the years has them believing it is a bad thing. The government must maintain the lower class wage earner. A cost benefit and to the bigger corporations since they can't get enough illegal migrant workers. Everywhere in the US and the rest of the western world the higher the minimum wage the better the economy. Not only do the corporations benefit but so do economies of the businesses and population......More money to spend brings more production and more production more jobs and so on and s forth.
The Slave labour of years gone by in the US made the US the richest nation on earth - low or no cost labour = high profits. The US just can't get by this sticking point. Even though there is not an area on the planet where they can prove there way is better than that of those you fight for better minimum wages. Oh, by the way, the US has been at the bottom of the list in minimum wage - the richest country on the planet has the worst paid people in the developed world.

The majority of the jobs in the US are in small businesses. If I own and operate Rick N's Widgets, and I employ 5 people at minimum wage, my labor cost is 5x. If the minimum wage is increased by 40%, my labor cost would now be 7x. I'm not IBM, my cashflow is finite. I can either lay 2 people off or raise my prices. Remember, WalMart is right down the street, so raising prices is a decidedly bad idea. What course of action is left?

Raising the minimum wage might help a small group a little, but will cost the people on the absolute lowest rung of the economic ladder their jobs. I'm sure those people would thank you from the bottoms of their now unemployed hearts.

EDIT: Reading these responses proves once again my long-held belief that no liberal has ever grasped fundamental economics.

Because it will put pressure on the already tight labor market. Due to the great economy there are fewer workers looking for work. If the wage goes up it will put even more pressure on small business' to find employees.

There is little need for minimum wage laws anyway since so little of the population actually receives minimum wage. This is merely a case of the leftists trying to buy votes.

It isn't that they can't afford the minimum wage increase by itself, but that means that if someone is making $7/hr after working their way up for a few years, do you think that person will be happy when some new kid comes in making what he worked so long for? Minimum wage isn't all that will go up.

economy is great for big business, and outsourcing labor means they are not affected by the min. wage increase. The smaller businesses are the ones who are taking a hit both from the economy and from the wage increase.

Actually, that's a load of BS, on both sides.

The minimum wage increase was more symbolic than anything else. 30 states already have minimum wages higher than the federal level.

All the hype on either side is much ado about nothing.

They CAN afford it but why should they give up their money and profits? All they have to do is hire illegals who will work hard and be honest for less than minimum wage anyway. Thanks Mexico and Mexicans for ruining our country.
