A codec is a device or program capable of performing encoding and decoding on a digital data stream or signal.

In order to play a video file you must have the appropriate codecs installed that will recognize the files and be able to play them.

Example, in order to play a .avi file, you will need a divx codec.

To solve your problem download one of the programs from the link below. OPen your files in the program and it will give you information on the codecs required to play that file. You can then go to http://free-codecs.com to download the codecs. Here are the location for the programs:

Another way will be to install players that support all kinds of formats. Some of the most used are:

Try the K-lite Codec Pack. It comes with a Media Player for just about any video format. It's free also.

It means COder-DECoder (or something in that sense)
It's some string of commands so as WMP could read a specific file format. WMP could only read a few file formats when you install it, so you have to give it 'instructions' to be able to read other files, which are the codecs.
The codec you need depends on the file...
Most likely, the codec you need is either DivX or XviD

download and use VLC media player to play the movie file and also download the codec pack from here too, this should fix your problem for most downloaded movies.

The codec is the rules for taking the file and converting the digital codes to an image - uncompressing it, choosing colors, etc.
