You always have to pay the line rental to BT, but you can use other providers for your calls

I think you'll have to have the phone line from BT installed, with a BT contract.
Once it is working you can move it to another provider. You will get a bill from BT for the period between the line being installed and the transfer to the other provider being completed.

You take the free broadband package with Talk Talk and you pay your line rental to them. The whole caboosh is about £20. Whether its any good or not is another story

i think you can, my mum had a bt phone years ago, and changed to cable, when they first came out
