Whose dumb idea was it to give them a queen? Not just an insect like queen (though they claimed it was similar) but an actual in charge handing out orders queen.

The original idea with them all as equals and functioning through the emergant hive mind as in the original episodes 'Q Who' and 'the Best of Both Worlds' were wonderful and ground breaking. Every bit as innovative as the cube shaped vessels (no aerodynamics in space, after all)

Does anyone else feel the same way?

I remember an interview with a producer when First Contact came out saying they thought they needed to give the Borg a face - a villain everyone could hate. I think thats a terrible excuse for ruining what made the Borg such a cool idea, but if you disagree, please say why!

I have always thought that was kind of lame. A leader (not really leader) like Locutus was much cooler, he spoke for the collective but was not in command.

Well not really.
TV being TV, it aims to those who love the concepts but also needs to appeal to the masses who might not think too much about the concept and ideas behind the borg.
So Queen borg is just the figure head with which to personify the borg.
You can easily imagine the not so bright to not understand that the borg are a collective and so anyone could be the leader.

Well thats my thought. Do love a good borg episode though.

The Borg work as a collective just like bees. They are drones and they have a queen. That is the thinking on creating the Borg. They are like African killer bees and assimilate other species of bees into their collective.

I never actually thought about it. I guess they did it because that was the way they figured out to destroy the borg. There had to be something that connected all of them so that they could be destroyed.

I think she was created just for the movie "First Contact", probably to give it more appeal to movie goers. I think she is the embodiment of the "central plexus" that was shown in a "Voyager" episode prior to that. Besides, they needed someone to "tempt" Data to go to their side.

Leviathan: is that really the best you can come up with in my 'gran' question? I'm sure you're capable of more.
