I don't know a lot about Metallica, but I assume they did what most then-unknown rock bands do. They loaded all their stuff in a cargo van and drove cross country. They may have slept in their van or at cheap motels along the way.

If I remember my Metallica history right, it was in a van. Once they got there they crashed on the studio floor (I think the story is that Anthrax was in the studio) and got Dave Mustaine a bus ticket home.
