With Galileo the scientific method started. He was the first to ask nature to verify their conclusions about physical phenomena. It represented the starting point of the scientific way of doing.
Copernicus clarified the Astronomy with his theory of the Sun being the center of the solar system. His contribution was very important for the Astronomy and even to the rational methods, for he demonstrates that we must think objectively.

He used a telescope, and decided that the earth wasn't flat. He was inprisoned by the Catholic Church for his views, and finally pardoned just a few years ago.
