Arctic comes from a Greek word meaning bear and refers to the Ursa Major constellation which has the big dipper inside of it and is definitely in the north. The "Ant" comes from anti which means opposite and since it's opposite the Arctic, that seems to make sense.

Who Named Antarctica

From the word, Antarctic. See excerpt:

1366, antartyk, from O.Fr. antartique, from M.L. antarcticus, from Gk. antarktikos "opposite the north," from anti- "opposite" + arktikos "arctic" (see Arctic). The first -c- sound ceased to be pronounced in M.L. and was dropped in O.Fr. Modern spelling, which restores it, dates from 1601.

Another excerpt:

It was the ancient Greeks who first came up with the idea of Antarctica. They knew about the Arctic - named Arktos - The Bear, from the constellation the great bear and decided that in order to balance the world, there should be a similar cold Southern landmass that was the same but the opposite "Ant - Arktos" - opposite The Bear. (Circa 350 BC).

Still another, interesting reference to knowledge of round earth:

The arctic was named after the Greek word Arctus (meaning bear) because it lies under the constellation called "Big Bear." The Greek's had a hunch that the world was a sphere and thus labeled the southern pole region antarctus (meaning opposite of the bear). Interestingly enough, we now call the Big Bear const ellation by its Latin name Ursa major and in the transition from the Greek/Roman dominated euro-culture to one dominated by Latin, not only was the constellation name of Arctus lost, but so was the notion of a spherical world
