I am wanting to buy a router, but the adds are saying "people also bought"... and they are showing this adapter. It's about $40.00 on average. What is this, and do i need it? all i want is to be able to run a laptop on my home DSL connection. Also, how easy and safe is a hard connection for spiltting a network connection?? Please help me...

You have to make sure that you can receive a wi-fi signal. All you need is a wi-fi card, installed on your laptop. The other things you see, are probably extra things they want you to buy, but probably do not need..good luck..

Amber, check your laptop to verify it has a wi-fi adapter built in. Most do. Then all you need is a router. But if you only have the one laptop, isn't it much easier and cheaper to use a cat5 cable and save the router money?

If you have 2 or more pcs, then you'll need an adapter for them so they can recieve the wireless signals. The only way to SUCCESFULLY split the network connection is with a router in DHCP mode where it will run as your ISP's assigned IP and allocate IPs amongst your network computers.

I even have Time Warner as properly and that i linked a instant router to the modem. do no longer tell them you're hooking up a instant router in the different case they're going to desire to cost you like they mentioned. merely visit the save and get a router and connect it to the modem. you will could desire to power off the modem for variety of five minutes and then connect each and everything so as that it works. additionally, merely remember to apply some style of protection including WEP no less than so as that it is not truly trouble-free on your pals to piggy returned off your connection.

The adapter is for the use of a second PC. If you don't have 2 there is no reason why you would need it.
