where did this saying come from?

I think people used to say it when they were being accused of something.
And they would reply--you are barking up the wrong tree. but I could be wrong

The last time I barked up the wrong tree was when I had to chose between what was right and keeping my job. I barked, and the cornered raccoon inside jumped down and attacked me.

I lost my job in the end but the *** I was barking at is serving time right now. It's worth it in the end.

I don't bark up trees or anywhere.

...hunting dogs, cornering an animal (usually a racoon) who travels via branches to another tree leaving the dogs barking up the wrong tree.

I means your wasting your time and its time to move on...

it came from me. sometimes i bark up trees to see if I can scare the birds and eat them.

when I asked my mom if she needed a muffin I had made for breakfast. rather of merely asserting no she beginning yelling approximately how she needs to circulate on a nutrition recurring and stuff. Yeah...i do no longer ask her if she needs something now lol
