I was watching a news special the other night and it got me to thinking hypothetically-

If medical science was able to find a brain neuron that caused mass killers or just murderers to kill and able to surgically fix it, the only downfall would be for them not to remember their crimes. Should they then stay in prison, paying for a crime they dont remember or be let go to lead a productive life. Keep in mind that the cost of imprisonment is expensive and cost you as taxpayers thousands of dollars that could be used in other areas?

People should pay for their crimes- maybe operate at the end of their sentance and change the length or severity accordingly--a thoughtful question on life and morality and justice by the way--

So ... if I'm reading this right:

The perp commits mass murder, then is surgically altered to forget his crime, should we release him (since in his mind he has done nothing wrong), or keep him imprisioned (because everyone else DOES remember what he did!)?

Let's see:

Give a prisoner an expensive surgery that might (just MIGHT) make him a productive member of society ... Or keep him in the slam (thus avoiding the expense of an expensive surgery with no guarantee of positive results!) and prevent the perp from committing additional offenses!

My vote: Don't waste money on the surgery when you can spend it on more security for the prisons! Use the funds that would have paid for the surgery to pay for more corrections officers!

While we are at it, reduce the net cost of prisons by implementing all of the following:

1) All prisoners are entitled to "three hots and a cot" and BASIC medical attention, no more!
a) BASIC medical attention defined as only that medical attention available to the citizens with no medical coverage whatsoever.

b) "Three hots and a cot" defined as three meals which, when taken together, add up to the minimum requirements for a an otherwise healthly adult. All components of such meals should be easily aquired by a family of three, depending on one minimum wage job for their existance (current minimum wage times 40 hours per week times 52 weeks per year! Minus reasonable and customary charges for lodging and utilities) and a sleeping area, defined as 1 sleeping pad (not less than 1/2" in thickness) and one cover.

2) All Prisoners will fall out daily for work details.

Detail #1: Chain gang, cleaning the roads so that "John Q. Citizen" has a roadway devoid of trash and roadkill!

Detail #2: Recycling, All trash, regardless of source (chain gang and curbside pickup) is sorted and recycleable materials removed (Citizens may want to SHRED any sensitive documents!)

Detail #3: The farm, Growing what the prison consumes! All meals for the prisoners will be derived from what this operation grows! Any additional crops will be sold, at market price, to aquire other items needed to run the prisons (materials for uniforms, sleeping pads, covers, etc)

Detail #4: Prison Industry, These people will provide, those items necessary to the State. License plates, Sheets and linen, uniforms for prison facilities (COs will have the option of outside vendors for a nominal expense), Extremely easy (we aren't talking about rocket scientists here) assembly tasks (envelope stuffing, etc. maybe "hire out" this branch to industry for profit!). Any profits made by Detail #4 will offset the drain that the Penal system causes on society as a whole (no "extra priveleges" will be afforded to the prisoners).

Hot D***! This looks like a winner! Maybe the State can show a profit form the penal system?

Hypothetically ,This medical operation can be expensive. The best way to save tax payers money, would be to kill and cremate the body of murders. There ashes would make good compost for my flower bed

hmm interesting question. But fixing someone's head doesn't guarantee that they won't do it again.
