It goes into your gas tank, then into the engine. The gas is mixed with a proper amount of air, then is burned. This burning is what causes your car to go. Once the gas is burned, it exits the engine as exhaust and cannot be used again.

It is stored in the gas tank, and a fuel pump, pumps it to the engine through either a carburetor or most cars now use fuel injection. The best way to save fuel is inflate your tires that will help 3 to 4%, check your air filter and replace (I use the K & M high output filters they cost $40 but will last up to 500,000+ miles). Also change your spark plugs and wires, every 50,000 to 100,000 miles.
