Moses Tanui from Kenya won the 1996 men's Boston marathon with a rate of 12.19 mph. The women's race was won by Uta Pippig from Germany, who ran at 10.69 mph. Pippig's time was .3 hr longer than Tanui's. Find their winning times.

If you assume the races were of equal distance d, and Tanui's time was t, then Pippig's time was t + 0.3

distance = speed times time

d = 12.19(t)
d = 10.69(t+0.3)

So 12.19t = 10.69 (t + 0.3)

Multiply out the right side, move the t term to the left side, then divide to get t. Use this to get the winning times (in hours)

Rate = distance/time
distance=rate*time
You don't know the distance(But for Marathon it's usually 26.21875 miles,but don't consider as it's insignificant in this problem) and time,but you know that pippig's time was .3hr longer than Tanui's
Let the time for both the people be t and distance be d for both of 'em
R1 be rate of Tanui and R2 be rate of Pippig.
d=12.19*t ->1 for Tanui
d-12.19t=0 ->1
d=10.69*(t+0.3)->2 for Pippig
Simplify the 2nd equation,you will get
d=10.69t+3.207
d-10.69t=3.207->2
2-1 gives
1.5t=3.207
t=2.138 hrs
So Tanui's winning time is 2.138 hrs and for Pippig it's 2.438 hrs

This question cites original player and their times
Moses Tanui from Kenya has won the 1996 Men's Boston Marathon in 2hr 09 min and 15 sec.
Uta Pippig from Germany has won the 3rd prize in 1996 Women's Boston Marathon in 2 hr 27 min and 12 sec

T = Tanui's time
P = Pippig's time

As P was 0.3 hrs longer than T, we can add 0.3 to T to find P.This gives us the equation P = T +0.3

A marathon is 26 miles long. Use the distance formula ( d=rt).

Using Tanui's info gives

26=12.19T

Divide both sides by 12.19 and you find that Tanui's time is approximately 2.13 hrs.

Now substitute Tanui's time into the equation we came up with for Pippig's time.

P = 2.13 +.3
P = 2.43 hrs

12.19 t = 10.69 ( t + 0.3 )
1.5 t = 3.207
t = 2.138 h
