Half of respiration takes place in the cytoplasm and half in the mitochondria if this question is A level or below then you should answer mitochondria.

If you are doing your degree be aware that glycolysis (the first part of respiration which uses no oxygen) takes place in the cytoplasm.

mitochondria - enzymes are contained in its 2 membranes, outer + inner [cristae] - enzymes functioning in cellular respiration + control release of energy fom cell
