it's really a word to describe someone who makes unnecessary assumptions about people.they tend to over exaggerate their own importance too.

You seem to have the wrong idea about being "pretentious"? I'll give you an example of "pretentious" Last week I went for a Pub Lunch with 2 women friends,and wanted reasonable Pub Grub, such as Jacket Potato, followed by Apple Crumble, and we couldn't stop laughing at one of the very fancy Desserts, which was sprinkled with "Bee Pollen". Now that is ridiculously over-the-top, and definitely pretentious!

she has a ticket on herself!!
she goes out of her way to do things that are just unneccessary
thinks she is so much better than everyone else and makes it obvious
