They're reffering to using vegetable oil as a "Bio-Diesel" fuel.

It's for Diesel Engines,,,and other oil-burner devices

Here's a very brief overview on the subject which covers the basics.
Internet has "more info than you can read" on the subject

Some people are burning ivegtable oil in Diesel engines. there are 2 ways to use it. One is raw but it has to be preheated before running thru the injectors and newer Huey style injectors dont like the raw veggy oil. The second way the veggy oil is processed . They use a caustic added to the oil mix wait for it to seperate part of it will be clean biodiesel and the other part is glycerine . the 2nd way is by far the best. it can be used in most diesels. There are lots of arguments on the subject. but facts are facts Bio diesel has much higher lubricity burns cleaner with less harmful emission particles

Vegetable oil is a legitime fuel, but only for oil burning fuel systems. Diesel engines can easily accommodate vegetable oil to burn. (Volkswagon and Mercedes - Benz being the predominant autos brands, and many truck brands also)
Do not attempt to use it in your gasoline powered car!

But diesels will have to be adjusted, or converted to burn the vegetable oil, and the conversion can be costly. Most who use the system keep the original fuel system operational and use a switch whenever they need to change from one system to the other.

Vegetable oil is environmentaly friendly, but sources are scarce.
McDonald's and other restaurants will usually work with you to purchase their used vegetable oil. (They otherwise have to pay for disposal of it.)

Be aware that your exhaust fumes may smell like French Fries.
Check out the archives of Popular Mechanics Magazine for more complete information on vegetable oil converters.
