Two of my dogs ate Tomcat rat posion on Friday afternoon. The dogs are a min pin that weighs about 12-15lbs and a italian greyhound that weighs about 7lbs. I was cleaning out a cabinet and the posion was in the very back of it. They must have gotten in out when I turned my back- they are very quick. It was not a whole block- one of the corners was gone off of it and the two of them ate the one block. I called the vet right away and they told us to do the whole peroxide to make them vomit thing but they never did. So we jumped in the car to go to the vet and get another box of the exact posion to take with us as we had no more at the house. I called the 800 number on the back of the box for Bell Labs. They asked lots of questions about the type of dogs, weight, health of dog and the amout they ate. In the end he told me that the min pin could eat 4.5 cubes and the ig could eat 3 cubes b/4 it would be a toxic dose. He said they would be fine b/c neither one ate a whole cube.

The 800 number gave me signs to look for if there were a toxic dose and the dogs have had none of them come up. I know it can take a while for the signs to show. Thanks for the help!

You need to take them to the vet. Rat posion can cause internal bleeding and is very bad for them. It is not a pleasant death for them so take them in before they get too bad. Take the box to the vet. They can give them the proper medicine to treat it. And if it were me I would take them in just to make sure that the company was right about the dosages and make sure your dogs are safe. good luck

Did you take the dogs to the vet? If not, I would get them there regardless if they are acting fine and if the 800 # people said they will be ok....they are not vets.
I had a dog die from eating rat poison and it took more than a couple days for the dog to even show any signs of being poisoned. I didn't even know the dog had ate the poison at the time, or I could have saved him. He needs blood transfusions and everything else.
Rat poison thins out the blood and they bleed internally. The vet can give them Vitamin K and that will help as long as it's not too late.

sweety, i understand the finacial situation however if you love this dog, give him to someone who can help him. If you can't afford to take care of ever need he has, which vet apps are required to keep dogs healthy, you shouldn't have gotten a dog in the first place. It's the truth and I know your pissed to hear it, but you know it. It breaks my heart to hear that happened, I really am sorry. I removed all the rat traps and poisen before I got my puppy. If you do loose your pet, take it as a lesson learned so it doesn't happen again. You just have to be more careful next time you get a pet, which should be when your around 20 or 30 and can actually afford to pay for his needs. This is an emergency by the way, your dog is going through pain and you are just letting it get worse and worse because you WONT get him the help he needs. Where are your parents? WHO let you (a 13 yr old) take care of a puppy?!?!?!?!?!?!??! If i were you, I'd cry to my parents or ANY relative that can help. Cry and beg them to help you. You've already learned your lesson i'm sure, NOT TO GET A PUPPY BEFORE YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT FUNDS TO TAKE CARE OF IT it takes almost a thousand dollars a year to take care of a dog. You should have looked into it before you accepted responsibility. He is YOUR responsibility and you are failing to take responsibility. ALSO If he doesn't die from this, he could die in the next few months or years unexpectadly because it's eating away at his insides. RAT POISEN IS MADE TO KILL WHATEVER EATS IT. So if it's not instantly, it'll happen sooner or later I PROMISE. This poor puppy will have problems for a very long time untill he passes. I can't believe your ignorant parents let you get a puppy. It's your damn parents fault for thinking a 13 year old is adult or mature enough to take care of another little life. YOU ARE A BABY How would you like if you ate rat poisen but, oops, parents cant afford to take u to the doctor so you will have to suffer and probably develope horrible intestinal issues that'll kill you.

I think you did the right thing by calling the vet and the number on the back of the box. I am sure they gave you reliable info so I would not worry too much. Continue to watch the dogs and if they start acting strange or have other symptoms I would take them to the vet again. I really hope the dogs are OK, good luck.

You have done all the things that the vet would have done. they would have had to call the 800# also and to look at the package ingredients to determine if the poison was and is toxic to your dogs and at what amount. so given that the dogs didn't consume lethal amounts and it is now 2-3 days later and the dogs haven't shown signs you should be ok. HOWEVER, signs of kidney/liver failure won't be noticeable until it's too late. So on that note I would take my dogs to the vet and have them run blood work just to be on the safe side. I always have believed paranoia keeps my animals safe!! good luck and hope all is well

If you want to be sure, then call the vet back and let them know that the dogs haven't vomited, also let the vet know what the labs said. most likely they will be fine if the poison control tells you that (they are not likely to want to get sued if your dogs died from misinformation) but to be sure call your vet and keep an eye on the dogs for awhile

Why have you failed to take them to the vet to get checked out? You need to do that. If that was your child would you not take them to checked out?
