It is a Buddist story.
Himsaka - later called Ahimsika - was born on a night when all armour shone, and under the sign of the thief.
He was a brilliant scholar, but other pupils got jealous of him, and told his teacher that Ahimsika was seducing his wife. The teacher was worried about losing pupils if he did any harm to Ahimsika, so told him, in effect, that he had qualified, but had to make a payment. This would be the provision of 1,000 fingers taken from the right hands of humans.
Ahimsika laid low in the Jalini forest, and took a finger from each traveller - something his teacher didn't think he was capable of.
Ahimsika later converted to Budhism.
The name Angulimala comes from Anguli - finger; and Mala - garland. He made a necklace of the fingers and wore them round his neck.
There are at least 2 versions of this story, and its all very complicated, but the above is a very brief outline.
Hope this helps. If you are still interested, look up Himsaka or Ahimsika on the net.
