I want to fly the last week of May, but the lowest I found was in the mid 700s. Is this normal for that time of year? Anyone know how to get there cheaper?

The last week of May is Memorial Day weekend in the US and Whitsun weekend in the UK. US and British airlines bump up their fares during this period because they can command high prices due to demand. Try coming at the end of April or beginning of May - you'll find fares will be much cheaper.

May is part of the 'Summer' travel season and $700 is probably pretty likely around then. $350 is not unheard of during Feb, March. I think some airlines often have sales around $299 where you buy now and travel in the Summer. You should check the major carrier's websites (BA, UAL, AA, Virgin, etc).

NOTE: Many of these 'low' fares can often come with as much as $150 in taxes, so a $350 flight might actually be closer to $500.

It somewhat of a double-edged sword. Trying to book five months out, there's unlikely to be a lot of great deals. You're better off waiting and watching for airline specials....and checking your Sunday newspaper's travel section for the best rates. The only problem with that is you risk not getting the exact flight you want. If you can be flexible with times, and sometimes dates...you should wait a little longer. Flights in early May should drop considerably because although the hotels may say its' peak season, most travelers are setting out at the end of May and early June.

700 is pretty typical for May. 350 is possible in "low-season" which is Nov-Mar, except around Christmas.

Try student agencies, as well as BookingBuddy to find the best deals.

I've been tracking and booking my own European airfares online since 1996. I usually fly transatlantic roundtrip twice each year. I watch pricing trends very closely.
