I think you are talking about a bumper that goes around the perimeter of the crib or cot. I had them with my babies, but mostly because they came in the set. I think in theory they are supposed to be there to provent the baby from bumping their heads on the crib or cot. However the baby will not be moving or scooting or rolling over for serveral months after it is born, so there is no need to prevent bumping at that point. Then is is suggested that once the baby can roll over or scoot that you take it off so that they don't get their heads caught in it, under it. So I guess my point would be that it's not needed. Unless you want it to decorate the crib or cot, you can skip it.
It is confusing, what do you NEED and what is just for fun.

I had mixed advice too. I ended up using a bumper, and also some receiving blankets. No pillow, no heavy blankets, nothing stuffed. A sleeping bag is certainly a good thing. After almost 6 months I think the bumper was a nice thing to have, though not mandatory.

The bumper that comes with the bedding set? There not dangerous at all or they wouldn't sell them with the rest of the set. Also as long as you tie it right on to the bed rails they wont even budge. This keeps the baby from rolling into the bars and getting hurt. Too many blankets is a lot more dangerous, they could suffocate. Swaddling or just a warm sleeper is better, to keep warm.

I made my own bumper pads and they were fine.Make sure the bumpr pads are velcroed to the rungs of the crib so the pads don;t fall on the babys face. As far as blankets, you don;t want to smother your child with too many blankets, there is a great sleeper bag that the baby can be kept warm without using any blankets.

Yes, it is recommended to NOT used a bumper pad, for fears of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). They feel there is a chance the baby may roll into the pad and suffocate, or that the pad reduces the amount of air flow through the crib.
Personally, I used one in my crib, and at no point (so far) have I feel it was a danger to my baby.
I would consider the warnings and become more informed about the issue... but I would use your own judgement.

No baby bumper--it is proven not safe for infants. You can buy the nice comforter if you want it for "looks" & just take off when you put baby in cot. You should just place baby in their pajamas-w/ a onsie underneath it, & they will be warm enough. when infants they like to be rolled up like a burrito, they should teach you that roll in hospital. So just a recieving blanket is good. NO SLEEPING BAGS, OR COMFORTERS! You do not want anything loose in the cot. babies actually get easily over heated too.

I used a bumper. I just felt weird not having it. What if they moved and bumped their heads? But then, when my babies were newborns, they slept in a bassinet in my room for the first couple of months.

I used them but they can cause a baby to suffocate. They do not caused SIDS as SIDS and suffocation are two different things and suffocation no longer plays a part in any SIDS death. I lost a baby to SIDS and have done my research on this. A lot has changed and the suffocation/SIDS theory is one of them. My son always got his leg caught in between the bars so we used one with all of our children.

They have liners that can protect the baby now without smothering it. Use blankets to keep baby warm.

there are breathable mesh bumpers that will keep your baby from getting arms or legs stuck in the bars but are breathable so they are not a hazard.
