Michael Jackson. Forget what they're talking about. I don't care what's going on in this man's personal life. I have never aver seen in my life or in footage people falling out for someone like they have done for Michael. From the time he was a little boy until the 90s, people have fallen out, crowded into places, fainted, cried, sobbed just to be near him-people of all generations. The others on the list may have had similar incidents, but not with such consistency and vigor.
Aside from that, his songs are classic...ABC, I'll Be There, Rock With You, Say Say Say, Thriller, Beat It, Bad...should I keep going?!

James Brown was the real pioneer as far as showmanship goes.
Tina Turner was also a pioneer and she made the biggest comeback.
Prince is the most talented, hands-down.
Madonna is the smartest as far as marketing herself and manipulating the media/fans.
Janet Jackson did manage to get out from under her family and become a entertainment icon during the 80's and 90's, but she had lots of help from her excellent producers (Jam & Lewis) and good team of stylists and choreographers. However, Janet was very influential for those of us Gen-X'ers who grew up during the 70's and 80's because she's one of us and we could relate.
Diana Ross was an entertainment icon, but she was over-produced, over-styled, and over-promoted by Motown. Lots of people just couldn't relate. And now she's old and drunk.
Michael Jackson and Elvis both had obvious talent, and were tremendous entertainers, but they went freaky early. That sort of thing puts people off. Everyone knew Prince wasn't right, but that was part of his mystique, so it was ok. Michael and Elvis were always mainstream, so any weirdness came under more public scrutiny.
Just a few thoughts....

The Greatest Entertainer would be Micheal Jackson, but the greatest, musical artist would Prince. Micheal Jackson could perform his tail off, in concerts, on tv award shows, and in all of his videos, that it was you would call an greaat enertainer!

I think in my lifetime (I am 46) it would have to be Michael Jackson. He was the total artist. Pity he suffered so much to achieve his artistry.
