He received the Nobel for Literature for his series of "Song Offerings" called "Gitanjali'. " Written in Bengali, it draws on both the ancient and the modern: the philosophy of the Upanishads, celebrating the mystical link between the individual soul and the universal soul, and the role of the poet or singer in reviving his land, waiting for rain (after all, Tagore wrote the words which became India's national anthem). In a good many of the poems the poet is waiting for a mysterious visitor, who could be a lover or God. Tagore was a central part of the Renaissance of Indian culture which began in Bengal and included Ramakrishna and Vivekananda. He was the first Indian to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, and unless you count V.S. Naipaul, who originally came from Trinidad, the last.

I am really amazed at reading the answers to this question. Some of the answerers have actually said Munshi Premchand!! It is a general knowledge fact that Nobel prizes are not given posthumously. Then someone said, Mother Teresa!! She has already got a nobel prize for peace, and I don't think her contribution to literature is enough to get her a nobel. Some have said that noone has won Nobel in literature in India after Tagore. Well...the asker knows that. The question is not who has won the Nobel. The question is, who can win the Nobel. Speculations is brought in question. I do not think anyone stands chance to win Nobel from India. Not because India lacks talent...but because the west does not want Indians or Asians at large to win too many Nobel prizes. Nobel awards are laced with a lot politics.

Did you know that Tagore is reffered in Mircea Eliade's "Maitreyi" novel? He was teaching Maitreyi how to write. The novel's plot is based on reality. Maitreyi Devi and Mircea Eliade (in the novel he is Allen) were lovers.
When Maitreyi found out of the existence of his novel (translated from Romanian into several languages), she also wrote a novel entitled "Love doesn't die", an autobiographical novel, a response for Eliade's "Maitreyi".
Both novels are centered on love.
I've read both novels, they are great!
