My twin boys are blanket snobs. Anything that isn't the softest microfleece they turn their noses up lol! So, my suggestion is microfleece. BabiesRus has some REALLY soft fluffy ones.

Edited to answer your additional question:
The one microfleece blanket that I pulled out of their drawer says 100% polyester. The others don't have their tags anymore.

Micro fleece is probably thicker, I prefer cotton blankets. They have kept all 3 of my girls nice and snug and are super easy to toss into the washer.

I think this completely depends on what you are planning to use the blanket for. I think that flannel and cotton blankets are the best for swaddling, which is what many newborns prefer. Microfleece would be too bulky to use for a swaddle. I believe a microfleece one would be warmer, but no necessarily softer. Cotton and flannel can be incredibly soft, especially after repeated washings (microfleece tends to sometimes get more rough after lots of washings.) Microfleece is obviously the thickest, and I would even venture to say the easiest to clean. Baby spit up and food, etc. have always seemed to clean off of microfleece the best.

I think you would probably be happiest having blankets made out of all three materials. You will find occasions to use all of them. If you are asking this question in hopes of finding the best blanket for a lovie, I think it would be a good idea to let your child choose which one they like the best.

One of my favorite blankets is the Pottery Barn Kids "My Best Blankie". Very soft and snuggly. Check it out! http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/k3163/index.cfm?pkey=xsrd0m1%7C16%7C%7C%7C1%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7C%7Cblankets&cm%5Fsrc=sch

Flannel is cotton but warmer. I dont think microfleece breathes though.

Flannel is my fave. They launder easily, don't get pills on the fabric and are readily available everywhere! I bought mine at Babies R Us. We use Gerber flannel receiving blankets for swaddling and everything from changing baby on them, to covering him up for warmth in the stollers, draping one over stoller to keep sunlight out of his eyes in the stroller, folding one in half and keep it on your shoulder as a burp cloth.

The Gerbers flannels are my multi-purpose favorites. I bought 16 of them at once and that amount was perfect for us. My 3.5 year old still has one layed out at the foot of his twin bed!! And if they fall in love with it and that is their FAVE blankie at least you have more if they lose that one. We had a baby Dior blanket that was a gift and I lived in mortal fear of that thing falling apart or getting lost in our move. It's best if they fall in love with one that's replaceable.

Good luck with your baby!!
