If you lay hardwood plank floor over concrete you must lay down a plywood or OSB subfloor first. Use a vapor barrier also. Laminate floors can go over concrete with only the foam underlayment.

I did this and I'm an artist, not a contractor! It's pretty easy. I spent a lot on the vapour-lock underlayment and you should, too. It's the "important part."

Get a good "3 in 1" or so product and make sure it both overlaps (the underlayment) and goes up the walls. You can trim that part later but you want the overlap to "lock" on the actual floor.

Piece together your flooring, making sure the underlayment doesn't expose the concrete floor.

That's it. Mine has been down in my bedroom for over 5 years and it's just great. Best home improvement I've done! The people at Home Depot are very helpful if you have particular questions.

The only drawback for me is I'm mathmatically-challenged and I had my dad help with the measuring and cutting when it got down to that part. The vast majority was just laying it down and snapping it together (I used a laminate that looks like white pine).

another way of applying hardwood to concrete is to lay 1x3 strips of wood on the floor, perpendicular to the application 12" appart from one another. for warmth, place rigid foam insulation between the strips ( known as sleepers) and nail your hdwd to the sleepers and you will not only have a nice hdwd floor, but a warm one. It will float and move with the weather and not buckle. keep it 1/4 inch away from all walls and then put your base molding over the hdwd. If you want to, you can place a dab of glue on the ends of the sleepers so they won't move during the installation of the floor.
