I have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop, which I have had for over a year now. I am fed up with all the stuff that they put on it, such as dell system restore and quickset and such like, and I don't even know what half of it is for!
What is safe to remove or not? I'm not keen on starting the whole thing from scratch like removing Windows cos of all my stuff on here...

Thanks everyone for your answers so far.
I know how to add/remove programs and all that, but I'm just not sure what I can remove that Dell have put on there. I'm quite happy with windows system restore etc and don't need Dell stuff but I'm worried that it will have an effect on the OS in case they've put some sort of lock on here or something?

I wouldn't remove system restore, it could be use full later. My wife's got a Dell desk top, had it 3 or 4 years now with no troubles. But be care full what you remove.

I'd keep some 'rubbish' on there. Such as the Dell System Restore. If you don't know what something is for, open it and read the help information, google it. Just find out. It could be useful and essential to the system.

this is a awkward question,in theory you should be able to buy a new windows xp o.e.m disc and install it on to your laptop,as all the extras dell have put on will come on the recovery disc so thats out the question
but by using a fresh windows xp disc this will just install the basic windows xp operating system(plus sp2) and none of the dell crap
but before you do this like the other answer said, see if theres a uninstall option by going to control panel>add/remove programs and look for any of the add ons from dell
however i would be very carefull about removing the dell system restore as this may have a effect on the normal working of the laptop, seek advice from dell
it makes me think why dell want to put a restore option on their laptops when theres a decent restore option built into windows
i hav never bought dell and never will,if you take my advice, either go to http://www.misco.co.uk/applications/category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=602,or build your own p.c,s,its much cheaper and you can put your own programs on it
good luck

If you want to remove all the "rubbish" from Dell, you will have to start from scratch, especially since there is a special partition Dell puts on that allows a level of access for diagnostics

click start and go to the control panel. click on add/remove programs. remove whatever you want from there. i would keep dell system restore just in case you ever decide to restore in the future.

well if ur gonna delete SYSTEM RESTORE, and u accidentally delete somethin u didnt want to, SYSTEM restore can actually restore the file or program u accidentally deleted, so just leave it alone and remove anything on ur desktop as all these items will slow ur boot up time

I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
These are cleanup tools. Ad-aware cleans files, and SpyBot cleans the registry,
You might run your Anti-virus scan.
Go to START and pick RUN. Type MSCONFIG and go to the startup section. Uncheck the programs that you do not need. Keep your Anti-virus checked.
Good luck and Happy Computing!
