I've done a little research, and I think that this is a possibility. There are many accounts of people who have seen these beings, and have even connected with them. If human beings have spirits, then why not Nature itself? Nature is just as alive as we are.

Most cultures have some concept of a nature being. The ancient Greeks had lots naiads, nymphs and Dryads to name but a few. There are also the fairy folk of Celtic, kappa of Japan and Hindu yaksha. You could interpret this prevalence of belief as evidence that something like the fairy folk must exist. Certainly there is a lot of anecdotal evidence to support this idea. Indeed, belief in fairies is so strong in Iceland that entire building projects have been re-sited to avoid fairy stones.
Another explanation could be a shared understanding of natural anthropomorphication from our collective unconscious. Humans have a natural tendency to ascribe human characteristics to inanimate objects. After all, the very first religions were shamanic and thus believed in animism, the concept that all things possess a soul. You could say our need for creatures like fairies comes from a wish to empathise with these other souls, to be part of a greater whole.
As a witch, I revere nature. I believe that everything has a spark of the divine and that we are all connected through that shared spark. Perhaps nature spirits are an expression of this divine nature and why you never feel quite alone in the middle of Nature.

I must admit, I dont believe in the slightest. Of course, Im the first to admit Im also painfully ignorant on the subject.
Someone provide me with a link with some details, and maybe some evidence, I'll take a look and then I'll tell you in a more informed way what I think... I should warn you, Im a bit of a cynic though, so dont hold your breath.

I believe more in Shinto and the old time Fae. Mainly because of what I've experienced. I swear I've come across a cait sith before (no, not the eponymous FF7 character, a type of faerie that takes cat form) and when visiting Japanese relatives I've come across interesting occurrences in shrines.

Depends on how you define spirit. Shinto mythology would argue that everything has a spirit - an essence, a character so to speak.
Mountains have a spirit (kami) in that they are mountains - they embody the character, the concept, the representation, the essence of mountains.

Yes, but you need to be open to them and not be programmed to think only in one way. This is why children can see them and adults can't.
