My sons spilled a container of gasoline (for cars) in the hallway of my house. I cleaned it with dish soap and water, and threw out the rug, but the smell is overpowering even after 3 days. What can I do to get rid of this, or what can I use that will make it better.

i understand your situation, it is so nice to come inside a house that smells so fresh and clean. you may need to clean your house first and check all the nooks and crannies you have. a good cleaning, scrubbing and dusting of your place will make you feel better. try to open your windows for at least 30 minutes, weather permitting, best time will be in the morning. it will help fresh air to come in and out with the old. using candles to freshen up your place is okay, as long as you use soy based candles, they don't produce smoke/soot like the glycerine based wax. but they are pricier but if you have the budget why not? my friend has eucalyptus plant and she takes a branch or two and hang it inside her apartment and in the bathroom, the steam from your shower will help release some oils from the eucalyptus leaves making your air fresh. you may also want to consider having some house plants to help get rid of unpleasant smells. as much as possible i try to cook outdoors, weather permitting but if not, i make sure that the vent is on and to clean up as soon as i 'm done cooking/baking. one more thing, i simmer some cinnamon bark, lemon peels and cardamom over the stove top. it gives a very pleasant smell in my house. good luck.

This is weird, but try a good quality of kitty litter, sometimes that'll get rid of the odor. Put it on where the spill was, leave it for a few days and sweep it up, you might have to do it a few times, depending on how bad the spill was.

There is a product made by ZEP found at Home Depot that will eliminate the odor completely. It absorbs the odor within hours of putting it down.I had a similar problem with diesel fuel when cleaning my truck underside and I tracked it into my house.
