Hi

I would say the original problem was probably to do with the ballast resister which calms down the voltage after start up. Its either missing, bypassed, or shorted across.

The fact that your vehicle now will not start is probably due to the extra demands which have been made on the coil due to the missing ballast, which have probably caused the coil to fail.

Check for battery voltage at the coil + terminal with the ignition switched on and the points open, and if it is present then close the points, switch off the ignition, and check for continuity to earth at the coil - terminal with the points closed.

If all of this checks out then you need to check for a spark, and if you have no spark then you need to renew the ignition coil.

DO NOT LEAVE THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON WITH THE POINTS CLOSED AS YOU WILL BURN THEM OUT (ironically enough!!)

Do not forget that you need to check and adjust the ignition timing if you renew or adjust the points as the dwell alteration will have a direct affect on the ignition timing.

Cheers

Geordie

The ballast resistor is missing. This drops the current through the points and keeps them from burning,
