Does it seem like society is turning into a boot camp?

Well, my right to swing my fist ends where someone else's nose begins. So in enclosed spaces that have lots of people, yes, I would support 'no smoking' rules, because everyone has to share that space and some of them may be allergic to smoke, or athsmatic. But outdoors or in your own home, no. Outdoors = free space, and you should be free to do as you please in your own home.

I don't smoke any more, so it doesn't bother me.

But, one time when I was a smoker, I got off a Greyhound bus, and put a cigarette between my lips. This big, burly guard came yelling at me. Apparently, that side of the building - outside - was not a smoking area.

He waited while I picked up my suitcase, my purse, my bag of snacks and my pillow (and wouldn't help carry anything) and he marched me around to the other side of the building. There were people who looked like hobos. The guard walked off and left me with them. Instantly, they ringed around me, asking for smokes. I gave them some, too. Was afraid of them, afraid not to. I smoked one, and then hurried into the building because I was afraid.

Not a nice thing to do to an older lady. Yes, these rules can be ridiculous!

I'm a smoker, but I still think smoking should be banned from all indoor public places (except bars/pubs). It really isn't fair to those who have asthma or are allergic to it to have to stay home because going out to eat would make them truly ill. For those who want smoking in public places banned just because they're @ssholes and "don't like the smell of it," well, they're a different story--they just deserve a swift kick in their righteous fat @sses.

Funny thing that. When I used to smoke I would have agreed with you. Absolutely.
Not having had a smoke for more than twenty years I now realise how selfish and silly I was.
Sorry - but no I don't think the ban is nonsense.

Smokers should be allowed to smoke ONLY WHERE it does not offend other people. They should be given a room to smoke in where they could smoke to their heart's(lungs) content. If a non smoker went in he wouldn't have a reason to complain..it would be a designated smoking room.Likewise in public places (not on top of mountains naturally) non-smokers should have the right NOT to breathe in other people's noxious fumes.I'm sure a compromise could be reached.
Courtney..you could say that about smokers too,if a place is non-smoking,pick a different place where you can smoke. What happens now is that they say"Heck,I want to smoke so I will!" Well from now on thank goodness they won't be allowed to!

Fo sho!!! I am sick of people telling me I can't smoke outside!!! OUTSIDE!!!! It's my earth too and if these hipocrites with their SUV's can pollute it my cigarette really wont hurt that much. And seriously if they don't want to smell my smoke they can walk a few more feet away from me or go into any business and be rid of it!! Grow up people- I'm not trying to get you to quit driving your SUV's or having your snot nosed children that you can't seem to control in ANY setting so leave me alone about my friggin smoking!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I'm a little bitter about the whole subject and I'm ready to move to a different country where I don't have to deal with the high and mighty non- smokers!
PS- If you don't like going to bars and restaurants that smell like smoke- GROW UP and make your own decisions!! You know that that particular bar allows smoking so GO TO A DIFFERENT BAR!!! You couldn't figure that out on your own??? You need the government to make your decisions for you??????

I think banning smoking in public places is ok but when they start telling me that I can't smoke in my own car or outside then they have gone too far!!

public places should be allowed to be given the choice wether to be a smoking venue or not, pubs and restaurants especially should be given the choice of smoking or non smoking. smokers go to smoking venues and non smokers go to non smoking venues. everyone happy. not that difficult is it mr blair.

Evidently you object to the smoking ban, but I, as a non-smoker, am very much in favor of it. I don't like to eat in restaurants that smell like an ashtray.

your body needs you, sound familiar, well i agree with it outside in public but behind closed doors of your home, your own problem, but I don't want to have my body permeated with smoke, causing me problems, which nearly were fatal, and smelling like a dirty ashtray because I cannot avoid mixing with those who do.
