The ground squirrels that live in or around the Grand Canyon are resorvior hosts for Yersinia pestis - the bubonic plague.

Thats why there are always signs that say "Don't feed the squirrels!"

Large populations of prarie dogs can become infected. This has been a problem in the panhandle of Texas, especially as cities have expanded outward and forced prarie dog colonies to intermingle more than before.

Prairie dogs are a big carrier, though it has been found in a lot of other small rodents as well such as chipmunks, ground squirrels, tree squirrels, mice, etc.
