Many computer experts recommend a hard drive reformat at least once a year. Reformatting the hard drive cleans out the Windows registry and removes any problem causing files.

Reformat the hard drive to return your computer to its original configuration.

When you load new software onto your computer, that software thinks it is so brilliant that you are going to want to use it every time you start your computer up, so it tells your computer to load that piece of software every time it starts.

Install a few software packages or games and your start up folder is soon pretty full then your computer takes a while to load them every time it starts up. Norton Anti virus, yahoo messenger, even MSN are notorious for hogging your start up folder.

As others have said use msconfig to stop them loading at start up, or use free software to control your start up processes. Download.com has a good selection, but it can take a few tries before you work out what you want to load and what you don't. I stopped an innocuous file from starting and couldn't access the Internet.

It depends how well you know computers.
most peoples pc's take a long time to boot because they have installed so many programs they hardly use & the pc has to verify & load each program before it can fully start-up.
you can remove stuff you no longer use that slows you down through task manager (alt-ctrl-del) but this will only stop them running for your current session. this should only be attempted if you know what you are doing.
If you want the pc to boot up quicker every single time you have to remove things from Msconfig's startup tab. (click start, choose run, type msconfig, click ok, click start-up. untick any boxes that arent vital things like anti-virus). again, only do this if you know what you are doing.

I'd recommend asking a techy minded friend to do this.
I'm normally the techy minded friend most of my mates call ;-)

Here are a few things you can try which should help.

1) Defragment your hard drive.
2) Uninstall any unused programs.
3) Find and remove any spyware/adware (try using adaware - free download)
4) Check whats in your startup files. If there are programs kicking in when you boot up your pc that you don't need to start then remove them.

Looking at the starting process alone, go to Run, type "msconfig" without the quotes, OK and select the Startup tab. This lists everything that runs on Start & you will doubtless find lots that don't need to be there - in fact, there's very little that DOES need to be there apart from rundll32. Deselect & reboot, it should run faster for you
