The Civil Service are not the best people to do your business deals for you. Let's put it like this. During WW2 the UK.gov employed the private business sector to manage just about everything, the transport, the shipping of goods, communications the lot. When UK.gov and its Civil Servants stick their noses in, this is when the cost [Wembley Stadium, the Olympics] becomes a sore-away eruption of the public money into outer space and beyond into the black hole of despair.

Bringing in consultants and paying them fees is the best move any business can make. For your cash, you get expert advice and contact with the right people for the right price. You avoid getting ripped off. Lets face it, how many politicians know anything much about business? Okay, a few are in business. My MP is a London Cabbie - all he knows is how to add more to the fare - especially after 11pm.

Best left to the experts.

Yes, but they're no more culpable than most companies. Hiring consultants shifts the blame from managers to unaccountable external individuals and creates the illusion that the managers are good at their job. In fact, everything would work a lot better in the Civil Service and business if managers took responsibility for their own decisions and only hired consultants in times of crisis.
