Depends on how sociable you are
Mages are a favorite among groups (some groups don't consider themselves complete without a mage). Mages do a ton of damage and are excelllent for Crowd Control. They can turn enimies into sheep and use their Frost spells to control the number of enemies you fight.
Hunters are good solo. Coupled with their pets, they are almost two characters in one. They have heavier armor, and are not as gear-dependant as other classes. Where they do have a place in groups (they are good at pulling enemies into ambushes), a lot of people refuse to join groups with hunters. There can be some problems if the hunter does not properly control his pet, leading to difficulties controlling the flow of the battle (if the pet is constantly attacking an enemy who is being crowd-controlled and freeing him).
So it depends on how sociable you are. Mages if you like groups, hunters if you like solo.

I would recommend a mage. Pets can cost tons of gold to maintain and with a mage you can provide your own food and water for downtime. I personally play a Warlock (which is nice if you do want a pet but don't want the responsibility that a hunter has to have) but mages are great for crowd control as well. One thing you can try is play two characters up to level five or ten to see which you prefer as well. I hope this helped and best of luck!

Better at what? Each has it's advantages. Personally, I would rather have a Mage. It has a higher burst damage potential, which translates into ... kill you fast when it comes to PvP.
The Hunter has the advantage of stealth, range, and pet. When it comes to PvP Mage Vs Hunter, it usually comes down to who sees whom first.
At PvE, both classes are capable, but the Mage requires a little more skill in handling multiple monsters in a single engagement.

Depends on what you want to go for, Mages are fun to play with because of all the spells and special abilities. The hunter starts to get fun when you hit lvl 10 and you can get the abilitiy to have a pet. Blood Elves get awsome pets too.

I have an orc hunter and a undead mage, both lvl 35. but i think playing with the mage is so cool because you get awsome new spells when you lvl up. hunter is good too but everybody says hunter dont have any skills so i kinda hate hunters now and i think their spells are wack. but hunters are easy to lvl up than mages. but i like their pets.
