I've got £48,000 to spend on my first sportscar. I'm 26, wealthy and keen on getting one. Can anyone suggest I buy something else, or am I making the right choice?

A lot of people have questioned my sexuality and wealthiness. I'm as straight as an arrow, my girlfriend is 18 and firm, and I made my money in property. Yeah, life is good! HAHA!

most of the people in this thread are pretty much beyond stupid.

here is my take, and remember, I am completely porsche obsessed.

they are outstanding cars, and will serve you great. they only lack one thing IMO, Character. theyre fast, look good, reliable, refined, but overall do lack that certain passion found in the 911s and such.

I would honestly look at the Lotus Exige S's, which are even faster (on a track), and much more outrageous. Youre young, sucessful, and might as well save the more boring cars for later. The Exige S is much more brutal and much more fun to drive.

If you want something even more insane, which I personally would, you could go TVR. While not the most reliable of cars, TVR's are as wild as you can get, scary as hell to drive, and scary fast. They caymen may be as fast as some TVRs, but it is not scary fast like them. No ABS, no TCS, no stability control, no anything. Just sheer car. Its amazing.

or if you want somehting more refined, get a Used 996 turbo. Theyre far faster, even more refined, a 911, which brings the uniqueness, and overall just a much better deal. Also very moddable if that is your thing.

Ha, ignore all the comments about it being gay etc, it's your car not theirs, and I assure you, nudging 300bhp in a RWD sportscar is not gay in the slightest.

To be honest, the main reason not to buy a Cayman is a Boxster S. With 48k at your disposal you'll be able to afford the Boxster S, and with it's increased capacity and power hike for this year, it's performance is within a whisker of the Cayman S, and yet it's cheaper despite being a Cabriolet.

Before you go spending all that cash, I'd take a look at the competition, if for no other reason than to weigh them up. Have a look at BMW's Z4M Coupe, a car which is light years ahead of the Z3 it replaces.

AMG SLK is a sound buy too. Again, the new SLK is much more the drivers car than it's predecessor, but still edged out by the Porsche & BMW for satisfaction.

Then there's the total opposite, the TVR, any TVR. They're not as reliable or well built as the German cars, but they have huge presence, tarmac rippling grunt and a noise to wake the dead.

It depends on what you want to use the car for. The TVR is the car of passion, and bought with your heart, and in terms of pace, even a carrera struggles to see which way it went for nearly double the price, but the Cayman is clinical, efficient, and useable everyday.

If you want to spend less, then wait six months for the new 3.2 Turbocharged Audi TT Quattro with DSG gearbox. The speculation is that it will feature the same stratospheric engine as the RS4 (thats 404bhp to be clear) which means it will be absolutely blisteringly quick.

Look pal a Porsche is gay unless you get a 911 or better the boxter and the cayman is the brokemans porsche if you trully consider your self wealthy get a ferrari or a lambo there are plenty of people that would not be impressed by your vehicle of choice some would even laugh, it dosent matter how much you paid for it. Personally I wouldnt advise getting a Porsche over all though because they breakdown faster than their 0-60. When I was 26 I bought a Ferrari 360 and it was all nice and **** but the sonofabitch was always at the dealer so I canned it for a Viper

Porsche isn't that the car that hasn't changed since prehistoric times ? it's an excellent car mechanically but is hardly awe inspiring . Go for a 1980 Aston Martin Vanquish what a car and very rarely seen , i imagine the running costs would be similar to a Porsche as well . This gives people the impression that you rate quality over trend , a trait of the truly wealthy .

The Porsche Cayman is a very good car, but I would seriously take a good look and test drive of the latest Boxster too, as it is cheaper and now has the same engine etc.

Personally I would push you budget very slightly to about £50-£51K and buy a second hand 997 carrera. It is a fantastic car and the running costs on the 997 are much lower than the 996 (20K mile service intervals etc.). I have done 18K miles in mine and it has not needed to go back to the OPC once yet.

brilliant car! But there are better choices than Cayman S! You can choose new MX-5.....or you can put your to your socket and wait until you could afford real super car as Ford GT or Bugati Veyron!
