Hey James
If you mean from a living there point of view consider this. I was teaching kids in a city and they thought that was crap, wanted very much to live in the countryside. Later I taught kids in a rural community (Norfolk) and they thought the countryside was crap and wanted to live in a city. Sad thing was, they weren't making much of what they had.
I grew up in a rural area and tried to go somewhere different every month, often with my mates.
Not really a solution to the question, hope it helps.

Because mining is an inherently crappy business.

If you think the Rhondda Valleys look bad, Google Map Cripple Creek / Victor Colorado.
