A lot of what it comes down to is that in all of history, it is the winner who writes the history books. This is the reason we call it the American Revolution and not the American Insurrection, as it would be called if the British won.

Because the Allies were the victors in WWII, we got the right to place blame, with or without different connotations. The relationship between the US and the soviets plays along wiht the saying, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." By this techinicallity, the soviets were our friends, so when we wrote the history books, the atrocities of Stalin were often over looked and not as publicized.

However, some estimates claim that Stalin is responsable for over 10 million deaths of his own countrymen as well.

We used to here a lot more about Stalin's atrocities during the Cold War but since we won and the USSR disappeared, folks are less likely to use this as a club to drum up indignation.

Also, you have to remember that the Holocaust was fully documented by the Allied troops as they liberated the camps. The Gulags happened out in Siberia and pretty much just faded away into the tundra. The only documentation was writings by a few of the Russian survivors (incredibly powerful stories BTW but not made for TV movies)

Finally, in the case of the Holocaust there are large, motivated and highly visible survivors organizations. In the case of the Gulag, mostly just a group of pensioners trying to survive.

History is written by the winners. The Nazi's lost, and the Russians were on the winning team. You also never hear about the fact that Japanese-Americans were locked in Internment camps in the United states during World War 2. You also rarely hear the truth that the "science" of Eugenics was spearheaded by American Scientists before World War 2 and that Winston Churchill himself was a huge supporter of it.

Eugenics is the belief that you can advance the Human Species using selective breeding and other processes to "keep the gene pool clean and pure." This was at the forefront of the Nazi political machine and a huge factor in convincing their population that eradicating the Jewish people was a noble cause. Once we saw the horror that came out of World War 2, Eugenics as a widespread belief in the states, and in England was "stricken" from the books.

Maybe you're not listening... I've read and heard that Joe doomed off at least 30 million of his own people. He was our ally for 6 years during WWII, but he was one of the big butchers of the 20th Century... BTW, we were on Saddam's side at one time too.
