It should be a tie. Just because Lovie's game was first doesn't mean he should go in the record books as the first african-american superbowl coach.

Would you be saying "everbody forgot poor old Lovie" if the colts were the first game yesterday? Lovie got it because he won and he was going to the Super Bowl. At that point we didnt know if Bellicheck (sp) or Dungy was going to the super Bowl so we couldnt really say anything except that Lovie was going to the Super Bowl. Now that the stupid colts won they are both in it. Heck if Dungy and the Colts win then he will be the first African American head coach to WIN the Super Bowl and Lovie will still be the first African American head coach to COACH in the Super bowl, so that still remains to be seen. Its up to the teams now to see what coach will be the first to win a super bowl.

Go BEARS!!!!!!!! (and I am a Charger fan so dont think I am saying this stuff because I like the Bears)

His achievement happened 4 hours before Dungy's. But, Lovie Smith is a class act and knows that he owes his coaching career to Dungy. There's will be more respect, than ever between the teams, this Super Bowl.

Because Lovie won his game first. I very proud of both Dungy and Smith. It will always be noted that Dungy was 2nd 4 hours later on that day.

Dungy and Smith are two accomplished NFL coaches with the two best teams about to meet for the championship. I can't think of anything less significant (to me anyway) than the skin color of these two coaches. The vast majority of the players are black, and their white counterparts don't think twice about who's black and who's white.

Why should we put some kind additional qualifier on them? (Oh yeah, they won their divisions, but that’s not all…they’re black!) The fact is they beat every other coach out there, regardless of race.

I predict that in very short order, this historical "milestone" will fade into obscurity.

Don't believe me?...Tell me quick who was the first black to coach and win in the World Series?

Hint...it was nearly 15 years ago.

Still don't believe me?... Then tell me who was the first black to coach and win in the NBA finals?

Hint...it was nearly 40 years ago.

The fact that this can still be a lead story in these next two weeks of Super Bowl hype makes me want to ask…don’t we realize that there will never be racial equality in sports (or ANYTHING) until we stop recognizing "the first black...whatever"?

In our universe we have a concept called 'time'. It provides us with a sequence of events. When Lovie won first he became first, when Dungy won second he became second. It's just how time works. It's relative, like Einstein.

Why is the first twin considered the older brother?

When one wins the Super Bowl he will be the first Black head coach to win a Super Bowl. Dungy controls his own destiny, so cool your jets.

Simply b/c of the schedule of games yesterday. But all else aside, who was first, etc...both are honored to be there. Both as coaches and as African Americans.

His team won first genius
His team won first, so he would be the first black man known to coach in the superbowl.
But what's the big deal, so they are black. Should they get a national holiday or something?

You said it - simply because his game was first. :-) But Dungy will be #2, though. :-)
