I have a MAC, and at I work I use a PC. I prefer the MAC hands down. Simple reason is, everything just works. I have worked with Windows many many years and yes things work, they can just sometimes be a real pain to get it to work.

At some level the decision is an easy. It will come down to two factors.
1. Is there something special that you need to do that requires a PC or a Mac? A particular piece of software or hardware that forces your decision.
2. If not then it is all up to personal choice and maybe the cost.
If you are looking for a higher spec machine then both Apple and a major brand PC maker such as Dell will be priced the same for the hardware. Various people have tested this and reported the results. For portables or desktops it is very close and many note the difference is less than $100.
On the cost front the Mac has a better software bundle and tighter integration. What this means is if you want to do certain types of things involving music, video and other things like email, etc then the Mac comes fully loaded for no real extra money. On a PC you need to buy or find the software for the same and it will not be tightly integrated.
So then it is all about look and feel, ease of use and other matters of personal preference.
I have included a link below. The lady is a PC supporter who chose a PC for home use even when she had to use Macs at the office. She clearly represents her position and indicates how she would choose differently now.
I have a 17" portable Mac that is at least two generations old in terms of hardware spec. Otherwise it is current as it has the latest OS. I have a degree in computer science, work in the industry for decades, worked for a PC manufacture, for NeXT (today's Apple) and for a Linux company. My money is on the Mac as the better choice for general use. I recommended it to my mother as I did not want to have her getting stuck and needing a lot of support. She has been very happy for some time now and I do not get calls asking to fix things like most PC users have experienced. The same with my father-in-law who used to not use a computer when he could help doing so.
Microsoft offers MS Office on both so there is no difference when it comes to spreadsheets, word processing, presentations. You can use other applications if you wanted to do so.
One final comment. With the latest Apple hardware you can choose which operating system you want to run at any time. You need to buy a copy of MS Windows. Hence you can hedge your bet as you are not locked in. With a PC you are not able to run Apple's OS X. The Mac is therefore the more flexible solution if you are really not sure.

I have a newer Imac and an IBM laptop. The IMAC has a low-pitched hum that drives me crazy. It sounds like a neighbor is down the street using a leaf blower. For this reason alone, I prefer the PC.

I use the IBM compatible PC ...
Always have & it has always worked just fine.
I enjoy the greater variety of all around options it offers me as opposed to the Apple platform.
I could change any time I want to ... can't find any valid reason to do so.
My PC performs flawlessly in every way.
Macs are great too ... I just have no need for one.

I use PC because I like to program and I have more options with PC. Nowadays, there really is little difference between what you can do on an Apple or an IBM PC.

PC
- Low cost and easy to find hardware
- Low cost (even many, many, many of them are freeware/opensource, what a wonderful world) and easy to find software
- More community support (hardware & software)
Change? To Mac? Let me think... NO!

PC for sure.
100 times better value for your money. As simple as that.
If you want to pay extreme amounts of $$$ for something inferior, then a MAC is good for that.
