It's not absolutely necessary but it gives you better picture quality. Component cables work very well. Mose people can't see a difference. I guess it depends how picky you are & how close to the TV you are when you watch.

it's not necessary but you usually will get better quality. it just really depends. for me, i get better picture quality with component video cables but don't get the same sound quality from the HDMI. if you have different cables on hand, try them both and choose whichever you like better.
