My little boy just LOVES this cheap'o little piano that my mother picked up for him at the dollar store. He's figured out how to work the off/on switch and plays his little "songs" all the time. I go a little nuts at times hearing all the noise, but he really does love it.
Also, if he doesn't have one of those fisher price boxes to sort shapes with, this is the perfect time to get one.
Wooden peg puzzles are also great because he can learn how to move them around until they fit.
Walmart where we live has this really cool activity box that has tons of things for him to do - including one of those beaded maze things like doctors offices always used to have.
Also, toys that he can ride on in the house are awsome. I got our son a little Thomas the Tank Engine that he can sit on and scoot about the house on.
There's TONS of things that will delight your son for his birthday.
Now, we just have to wonder, will he be one of those kids who rips right into his cake and gets it in his hair, or will he be afraid to get all that gooey iceing all over his fingers. lol!!!!
Good luck making his first birthday awsome for him and you.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LITTLE MAN!!!!!!!!

we got our son a lil 4 wheeler for his first birthday it was the only thing we got him that year. its now his favorite toy he plays with it all the time so it was well worth the money that we paid for it. but at one they are more interested in the boxes and bows then the actual present so if you want to just get him books, a teddy or clothes he'll be happy.
