Generally, a doctor will swab or snip a sample off a patient and send it to a lab for analysis.

The science of specimen collection and examination is generally called pathology (blood tests, urine exams, stool exams etc.) but the specific science dealing with cell studies is called cytology.

Study of cells gives information about cancer and other problems.
