The films need to be converted to DVD format.
Most DVD players will not recognize AVI or MPG files.

Use Nerovision (part of Nero 7) to do the conversion & DVD burn for you simultaneously :

These days it doesn't really matter if it is +R or -R. what does matter is the format.
If you have downloaded full DVDs and just burned them as data then you could get this problem. You need a program capable of burning a DVD film as the files may need reorganising. Nero will do this if you choose the 'burn dvd files on hard drive' option.
Otherwise the only other things I can think of is that you are using Windows media player and it hasn't got the correct codec. Ditch WMP in this case and get Gom

(my favourite)
or VLC

They'll play just about anything.
If you are trying to play it on a stand alone dvd player it may not support the file format and if so you are better converting the film to dvd before burning. Use Avi2dvd

Hope this helps a bit and enjoy the films.
