When I was in high school I was taught the art of Transcendental Meditation, my father had been practicing it for years. When we would meditate together I would often feel as if I were free falling, and on many other occasions I could feel a sort of energy coming off my father, almost like waves crashing over me, causing me to vomit after 5-10 minutes. Has anyone else had something like this happen or can someone explain why that was happening. I haven’t meditated in almost 20 years but I am thinking of starting again but am hesitant because I don’t want to experience the nausea and vomiting again.

Namaste! When meditating with someone is as powerful as your father was it can be quite an experience. It was too much for you. You literally felt his energy flowing over you at the time and were caught up in it. Anyone who was open to mediation would have felt what you did.
The feeling of free falling was due to your sub-conscience trying to tell you that you were out of control, you had no power over what was happening.
If you do it now you won't feel the same way at all.
Just make sure you are in a room that you feel the most comfortable in, in your home.
Take your time. Do five minutes at a time.
Otherwise you may risk your sub-conscience to BRING YOU BACK to that time long ago. It's a natural phenomenon and nothing to worry about. It's only a memory. Do it right and you will do well and experience your own wonderful ascension.

Hmm, I've never experience the nausea.
What I would say is try it again, if you find nausea starting to build, then open your eyes.
My type of meditation does so with the eyes open (just not focusing on any specific thing). It's a bit harder to do, but there isn't the falling feeling nor nausea you speak of. None of my students has expressed this either.
Though different types of meditation have different methods, they are all going for the same meditative state.
I would just go slow and stop for a time if you have that arise. You might look to another type of meditation of TM is causing you nausea, consistently.
Good luck.

Before class (martial arts) I try to find time to meditate for a few minutes - clear my mind, relax and such. I just seiza (kneeling with my feet folded under my butt), focus on a spot on the wall ahead of me and concentrate on breathing.
Often, two things happen:
1.) I seem to be more aware. It as if I can 'see' people as they walk behind me. My vision seems to fade out, but still, I'm somehow more aware of my surroundings.
2.) After a while, I don't feel like I'm breathing really, its more like I'm being breathed. As if the air is moving my body rather than my body moving the air.
Very odd. I can't explain what's happening physiologically, but I don't think that's important so I don't bother trying. When I have a chance to do this, I always have a great class though.

meditation is just the willfull invocation of a restful (but alert) mental state - similar to the one you experience just before falling asleep. i would be willing to bet that when you were younger, you also (on occation) felt like you were falling and jerked youreself awake.
I suspect your nausea was caused by your skill in sustaining that particular state for an extended length of time while not being "jerked awake". You probably don't experience that feeling much as an adult, and your deepened experience in the world will most likely give you more grounding. If you do start to feel sick, simply settle yourself down a bit - bring yourself gentle up a little so you don't become disoriented, but not so far as to become awake. A good way to do this is to bring your awareness back to your breathing and the sounds, movements and sensations that accompany it. Good luck.

Transcendental Meditation does have it's downfalls. I would stay away from that and suggest doing regular yoga and meditation or use another modality of relaxing and clearing the mind. You don't need to meditate in groups...and there is no harm in meditating with a friend that you trust. On another note, be sure not to eat before meditation and have a glass of water before you begin. Please read the website below as it has extensive coverage regarding this topic. Be aware & be careful....

Warning: when meditating, you can become possessed by demons because the brain is in a certain state that weakens the mind and demons take advantage of this state and can come and reek havoc, but you don't habve to listen to me, you can do whatever you want, I would never attempt any such meditation.
